Award celebrates the perseverance and innovation of pioneers in integrative oncology and environmental medicine
The Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine is a $250,000 cash prize awarded every two years to celebrate the achievements of Canadian researchers, practitioners and others in the field of complementary, alternative and integrative healthcare. The 2023 Prize was awarded to two recipients. Dr. Linda E. Carlson of Calgary, Alberta, and Dr. Stephen J. Genuis of Edmonton, Alberta.
Dr. Carlson is a visionary clinician and internationally known scholar whose passion and dedication to the field of integrative oncology has been a catalyst for systems change in cancer care worldwide. Her research in Psychosocial Oncology, Integrative Oncology, and Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery has been published in many high-impact journals and she is the author of over 250 research articles and book chapters, as well as two books on mindfulness. Dr. Carlson has dedicated her career to building a bridge between complementary therapies and conventional oncology care, as both a researcher and a clinician within the cancer care system. She holds the Enbridge Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology in the Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and serves as Director of Research and a Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychosocial Resources at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (TBCC)
Dr. Genuis is a pioneer in the field of environmental medicine who has shown tireless commitment in the exploration of alternative modalities. His primary research, focused on clinical toxicology and the impact of environmental toxicants on human health, has introduced a new paradigm of treatment for those suffering from chronic illness. He has authored over 115 scientific publications in over 50 different peer-review medical journals including Lancet, British Medical Journal, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Public Health, and Environmental Research. He believes that the provision of health care is a vocation from the heart and is often the doctor of last resort for individuals in dire health. He is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as in Environmental Medicine and is a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta.
