The International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine Celebrates its 25th Anniversary
In 1993, 25 years after Linus Pauling coined the word orthomolecular, the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine was thriving, there were several orthomolecular societies established around the world, the Annual International Orthomolecular Medicine Today Conference was the leading educational event in its field, and thousands of doctors, clinicians and researchers were engaged in orthomolecular science and practice worldwide.
A brief survey of orthomolecular organizations at the time includes:
1976 · The Orthomolecular Medical Society cofounded by Richard Kunin and Michael Lesser in the USA.
1984 · The Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) founded by Patrick Holford in the UK.
1988 · The Society for the Promotion of Orthomolecular Medicine (MBOG) cofounded by Gert Schuitemaker in The Netherlands.
1989 · The Flemish Institute for Orthomolecular Science (VIOW), now known as the Belgian Institute for Orthomolecular Knowledge (BIOK) founded by Walter Fache
1989 · The Korean Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (KSOM) formed by Sung-ho Park
1990 · The Danish Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (DSOM) founded by Claus Hancke.
1993 · The International Orthomolecular Medicine Association (AIMO) founded by Adolfo Panfili in Italy.
1994 · The German Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (DGOM).
With the growing number of individuals and societies, it was important to establish an umbrella organization to unite the existing organizations and to foster new growth in Orthomolecular Medicine. We registered the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine in March 1994 and held our first meeting at the Orthomolecular Medicine Today Conference (then known as Nutritional Medicine Today) in Vancouver on April 29th. Present at this meeting were Abram Hoffer, Gert Schuitemaker, Hugh Riordan, Claus Hancke, Richard Kunin, Jeffrey Bland, Harris Coulter, Jack Challem, Melvyn Werbach and others.

The ISOM continues to publish the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, now in its 51st year, and hosts the Annual International Orthomolecular Medicine Today Conference. The ISOM also co-sponsors conferences in other countries, including Japan, Spain, Algeria, Mexico, and The Netherlands. Since that first meeting 25 years ago, there has been substantial growth; today there are over 25 orthomolecular societies and tens of thousands of orthomolecular practitioners worldwide.

First SOFNNA Conference in Belgium
The Société Francophone de Nutrithérapie et de Nutrigénétique Appliquée (SOFNNA) was founded on 1st October 2018 in France by Amin Gasmi, Alain Menzel, Salva Piscopo and Cédric Lapauw. SOFNNA is a scientific non-profit organization that operates in European French-speaking countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg) and whose mission is to promote and develop a modern approach of orthomolecular medicine and nutrition based on nutrigenetics and personalized preventive medicine.
The first SOFNNA conference took place in Namur, Belgium, on December 1st, 2018 with the participation of speakers Alain Menzel (nutrigenetician and molecular biologist), Amin Gasmi (orthomolecular nutritionist and physiologist) and Salva Piscopo (nutritionist and naturopath). Among the topics covered were: preliminary ideas on nutrigenetics; metabolic biochemistry of certain micronutrients (vitamins A, C, D, B6, folic acid, B12); methylation cycle and detoxification; nutrition and lactose intolerance as well as a presentation on the variability of biological systems and its relation with nutritherapy and genetics. The conference closed with an interactive debate featuring the speakers and more than fifty participants, including doctors, nutritionists and sports professionals.
