Orthomolecular Treatment for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
Bo Jonsson, MD

Affective disorders – depression and bipolar disease – are common and cause much suffering. Sensible conventional treatments – pharmacological drugs and psychotherapy – can be important. However, medical drugs may not be good enough and side effects are common. Nutrients in food and supplements, physical exercise and other natural treatments are often helpful. These treatments are reasonable from an evolutionary perspective, address disease mechanisms, have less side effects, and even if less known, can be effective.

Orthomolecular Strategies to Prevent Mental Breakdown
Jonathan Prousky, ND, MSc

Even though mental breakdown is not a formal diagnosis, the majority of mental health patients struggle daily to keep themselves from destabilizing. Many factors increase their vulnerability to mental breakdown, such as poor emotional regulation, lack of discipline, poor insight, not being able to delay gratification, poor diet and lifestyle habits, and taking multiple psychiatric drug therapies. This lecture will: (1) summarize the common reasons for mental breakdown; (2) highlight common sense psychological and lifestyle interventions aimed at reducing mental breakdown; and (3) describe promising orthomolecular treatment strategies aimed at facilitating recovery.
